About Us

The goal of the Tappan Players is to provide a hands-on experience in musical theater to as many Tappan Middle School students as possible, and to provide a cross-grade social experience that enhances the students' middle school experience.

Who are the Tappan Players?

The Players were formed in 1991 by a group of parents and students who were interested in producing musical theater, and we have performed one muscial each spring for 18 years.

Tappan Players are an enrichment program of the Tappan PTSO.

Production Costs

Each show costs roughly $11,000 - $13,000 to produce. The money is raised through program ads and ticket sales, and any profits are donated to support the performing arts at Tappan, primarily the music department.

The majority of adults involved with the show are volunteers, and the cost in terms of their time and energy is staggering.

Student Involvement

We strive to include as many Tappan students as possible in our annual musical production, in both cast and technical crew (set building, backstage crew, props, costumes, lights, etc.) However, given the size of the stage and the limit on adult supervision during rehearsals, we are limited to roughly 130 cast members and 24 crew members.

Tappan students must sign up to audition for the play or to participate in the crew. Everyone who auditions gets a part, so signups are limited to the number of students we can accomodate. Signup slots are divided equally among the grades, but within a grade level signups are given out on a first come, first serve basis. Signup generally takes place during the lunch hour on two days in early December. Complete details are published in the Thursday Thing and given in the Tappan morning announcements.

Permission slips that outline the responsibilities and time commitment for participating students and their families are available in the house office immediately after the Thanksgiving break. A student must have this permission slip, signed by a parent or guardian, in order to sign up for crew or for an audition for cast.

We maintain a wait list of students who are late with permission slips or sign-ups, but these students are not guaranteed participation.
